The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office released information about a pickup they thought was connected to the crimes on Tuesday morning
. After speaking to the media, Capt. Jason Gearman said his office received the first tips about the vehicle before he could reach his desk.
"That's the quickest I've ever seen something come through," Gearman said. "Literally, I left the briefing and as I was walking back to my desk, the detective that had the case was on the phone with someone that had called in to say, 'Hey, I know where this vehicle is. I've seen this vehicle before.'"
With the information they received, the sheriff's office tracked down and arrested 32-year-old Shaun Ruegge in Canton overnight. Authorities conducted two search warrants: one at a property in Canton and the other at a home in Sioux Falls.
The investigation stems from burglaries committed around the Minnehaha County area for several months.
"This has been going on for a while," Gearman said. "These are some older cases that we've connected this person to."
Gearman said that deputies will now comb through the stolen property they've recovered and asked the public to call the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office to report if they have property that was stolen.
If an item has been reported stolen, Gearman said the public to wait for deputies to identify the property before calling to check the status of their items.
He described the various items as tools, lawn equipment and other "silly things that people steal just to steal."
