Sioux Falls, SD
After losing its head coach and a half-dozen games last season, the Lincoln football team is looking for better things in 2017.
After an offseason full of new terms, new offense, and new defense, Lincoln is just two days away from kicking off a new football season.
Jared Fredenburg is the Patriots' new head coach after spending more than a decade as an assistant at Roosevelt.
"We asked a lot of them in the offseason to put in some time and they've been really willing to do that and just really creating a buy-in for them to just believe in that we can move forward and get this ball rolling," Fredenburg said.
Despite finishing 3-6 a year ago, in a season that included a mid-year coaching change, the Patriots are eager to be back on the football field and to return Lincoln football to its winning ways under its new leadership.
"Everybody needs fresh starts and it means a lot to everybody that you know there's new leadership here. I want to say that things are getting done a lot more now so it's not false promises but he's pulling through like he said, he's told us," senior Collin Brison said.
"They're working hard. They're wanting to be good. They're wanting to get back to where Lincoln football was a couple years ago so we're on our way, we have a ways to go but we're on our way," Fredenburg said.
As kickoff quickly approaches, Fredenburg is excited to see how his team competes under the Friday night lights.
"Obviously we want to win, but I just want to see you know the red and blue out there getting after somebody else besides ourself and just seeing how we can compete and be in a tough situation, be in a different game situations that you're going to face," Fredenburg said.
"I'm looking forward to is going out and hitting somebody honestly. Once you hit somebody than you know the season's in," Brison said.
The Patriots open their season Friday night against Rapid City Central. Kickoff is set for 7:00 at Howard Wood Field.
