Sioux Falls Christian senior Kate Wynja won her second straight class "A" individual championship on Tuesday, but signed an incorrect scorecard. She caught the mistake within minutes of leaving the official scoring area, but was disqualified.
Wynja had tapped in for a bogey five on the final hole to win the title by five strokes, but signed for a four, not five, on the 18th hole and was disqualified. A popular player on the course, Wynja has experienced an outpouring of support from teammates, coaches, and strangers.
"Wow, yeah, my phone is blowing up with love and support from people I've never even met. Right after I found out, I was crying because I thought I had let down my coach and my team, and a random team that was there that I had never even met or seen before, they came up to me and they were crying. They hugged me, and were like, we don't know you, but we know what happened and love you, and that meant the world to me," Kate Wynja said.
