Seekamp Gives Back To State That Helped Shape Her Career

Yankton, SD

Former South Dakota women's basketball standout Nicole Seekamp is back in South Dakota, and is hosting a camp in Yankton.

Former Summit League Player of the Year Nicole Seekamp is hosting her first-ever basketball clinic at Yankton High School, and hopes this camp can help give back to a state that's had such a big impact on her.

"I think for the kids to see someone that they watched, or may not have watched, but for them to see me come back and try to help them and teach them and help with their development, I think that's quite motivating for the kids and hopefully they get to learn a few things from me," Seekamp said.

The three day clinic is for both boys and girls, and features three different age groups with kids ranging from 8 to 18 years old. The focus of the camp is on the basics of basketball.

"With Lebron James and some of the best WNBA players like Maya Moore, we kind of focus on being just like that and we want do all the fancy stuff. I think we overlook the fundamentals of basketball," Seekamp said.

Seekamp heads back to Australia next week but only for a bit, as she'll be a part of the national team traveling to China in July for a six-game Four-Nation Tournament. The former Coyote sees it as a chance to impress before the Australian World Cup roster is decided in August.

"It's just another opportunity for me to kind of expose myself and show them what I got and what I can do. Hopefully that's enough to kind of persuade them to pick me for the future teams," Seekamp said.

Whether she makes that World Cup roster or not, Seekamp says the journey from USD to now has been an enjoyable one.

"There's a lot more happening than I thought I would be doing but it's all been fun so it's all good," Seekamp said.

Seekamp's clinic goes until Friday and then she and the Australian National Team will travel to China for the Four-Nation Tournament which begins July 9th.
