When it comes to summer rain in KELOLAND, there are multiple ways to get it.
Instability, low pressure systems, along with warm and cold fronts are main driving factors for getting rain in the northern plains during the summer. But, it also helps to NOT be in a drought as wetter ground has a better chance to help produce rain.
Another way for western South Dakota to get rain is during the monsoon season. Rivers of air in the atmosphere help bring in moisture from the Gulf of California. The river of air also acts as a low-level jet streak to help supply lift in the atmosphere.
Expect some of the monsoon rains to move into western KELOLAND over the next couple of weeks, some of it is thanks to tropical storms in that area as well. This should bring some relief to the dry conditions in western South Dakota.
