Storm Center Update - Monday PM, Feb. 12

It is a mostly cloudy and chilly day across the KELOLAND region. Most places have been in the teens with an easterly breeze. There has also been a broad swath of light snow across western South Dakota.

 Rapid City skycam weather

Tonight skies will remain cloudy, and a few snowflakes are possible across the region. We’re calling them flurries, because accumulations are expected to be only of trace amounts. Since it was not a warm day, it will be a fairly cold night, with lows in the single digits above or below-zero. Winds will be gentle as they turn to a southerly region, which should put the brakes on overnight cooling.

 Monday night South Dakota weather

Tomorrow will be a mostly sunny day, and it will be warmer. Highs should be in the mid 20s to around 30 East River, and close to 40 with sunshine in the west. There will only be a light breeze out of the south.

 Tuesday South Dakota weather forecast

Warmth will build into KELOLAND from the southwest on Wednesday, Valentine’s Day. Skies should be mostly sunny, and that should help push highs into the low to mid 40s across KELOLAND, the thickness of the snowpack being the only limiting factor.

 Wednesday South Dakota weather forecast

Wednesday’s warmup will be followed by another round of colder air coming in from the northwest on Thursday. It will be a breezy and colder day, with highs dropping back to the teens and 20s. We’re also carrying a chance of light snow East River, with a better chance of snow in western and central South Dakota.

High pressure should build back into the region for a mostly sunny end of the week. After temperatures in the low 20s East River on Friday, We expect to be in the upper 30s to low 40s across KELOLAND for Saturday and Sunday.

Then another front drops down from the north starting Sunday night. By Monday (President’s Day) we expect to cool back to the teens and 20s with a north wind. It also appears we’ll see some snow on Monday in the breezy, colder conditions.

A look ahead on the forecast models suggests the cold air will be with us for the first half of next week before warming back up the second half of next week.
