Skies are sunny across the KELOLAND region, and temperatures are mostly in the 20s. There is a southwest breeze, which has helped to warm the atmosphere.
Tonight skies will remain clear, except for a band of clouds near the North Dakota border. Lows will be quite mild, in the teens, thanks to a light southwest breeze.
Tomorrow strong warming will move across KELOLAND from the southwest for Valentine’s Day. Skies should be mostly sunny East River, and partly cloudy in the west. Highs will reach the low to mid 40s across most of the area, with upper 40s in Rapid City. We should melt a lot of snow. There will be a gentle breeze from the southwest helping to create those warm temperatures, about ten degrees above normal.
Wednesday’s warmup will be followed by another round of colder air coming in from the north on Thursday. It will be a breezy and colder day, with highs dropping back to the 20s during the afternoon. We’re also carrying a chance of light snow across KELOLAND, with the best chance of light snow in western and central South Dakota. In any case, amounts should be minimal.
High pressure should build back into the region for a sunny but cool Friday. Temperatures will drop a few degrees below zero Friday morning, and then warm only into the low 20s East River. Western South Dakota will recover to the upper 20s to mid 30s.
The weekend is looking warmer than normal for mid-February. Saturday will be clear to partlh cloudy, with the mid 30s East River to the low 40s in Rapid City. Clouds will increase on Sunday. But temperatures will mostly be in the 30s. We’ll bring a chance of snow into the region from the north and west Sunday night.
By Monday (President’s Day) we expect to cool back to the teens and 20s with a north wind. It also appears we’ll see some snow on Monday in the breezy, colder conditions. Behind the front, we expect sunshine and chilly temperatures on Tuesday… subzero in the morning, and teens to low 20s for highs Tuesday afternoon.
A look ahead on the forecast models suggests the cold air will be with us for the first half of next week before warming back up the second half of next week.
